Guwahati , Mar 6 The AGP today said it has given the prestigious Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency to its ally BJP"in the interest of people".
"It is not true that we have sacrificed the Guwahati seat to BJP. First consideration is people's interest. So we have given the seat in people's interest and their welfare,"AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary told reporters after arriving from Delhi, where the two parties entered into a seat-sharing arrangement yesterday.
"All measures on seat sharing were taken based on the decisions taken in the working committee of the AGP,"he said.
According to the arrangement, BJP will contest in eight seats -- Guwahati , Nagaon, Mangaldoi, Silchar, Karimganj, Jorhat, Dhubri and Diphu. The AGP will contest in six constituencies - Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Tezpur, Kaliabor, Barpeta and Kokrajhar.
However, party workers have complained that the AGP would be hardly visible in central Assam as major seats like Nagaon, Mongoldoi and Diphu were given away to BJP. PTI
