Voter turnout 65% today in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, April 16: Polling was peaceful in Meghalaya that recorded a heavy voter turnout of 65 per cent today. Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer Prashant Naik told newsmen that the trend available so far indicated that the voter turnout would be around 65 per cent in the two parliamentary seats from the State.

Naik said that the actual voter turnout might be more after the arrival of all EVMs from remote polling stations of the State.

In the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, the voter turnout in the Shillong parliamentary constituency was 46.89 per cent and that of Tura parliamentary seat was 61.79 per cent. To avoid any manipulation or misadventure, the CEO installed CCTVs in all the eight counting centres in the State. These include the eight district headquarters and Resubelpara civil subdivision headquarters. The CCTVs will be used till the counting is over. According to Naik, this is a part of the surveillance undertaken in view of the long gap between polling and counting. There are 12.77 lakh voters to choose two representatives from 11 candidates contesting from the two parliamentary seats. THE SENTINEL
