ITANAGAR/KOHIMA/IMPHAL, April 16: Arunachal Pradesh recorded over 50 per cent polling at close in the two parliamentary constituencies of Arunachal East and Arunachal West amidst allegations by the opposition BJP of mass rigging. Police detained five persons for attempting to capture booths. Similar reports of booth capturing were reported from Upper and Lower Subansiri districts. Polling was cancelled in five places in Itanagar.
Sixty to 65 per cent voting was recorded in the lone Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram.
Barring a few stray incidents, the election to lone parliamentary seat and by-poll in four Assembly segments in Nagaland passed off peacefully today, recording an estimated 70-75 per cent turnout. Although there were reports of a few stray incidents, mostly involving supporters of rival political parties outside booths, the polling exercise was not hampered and was smooth, officials said.
Following damage of EVM by miscreants, the returning officer of Tuensang recommended re-polling at a polling booth under Tuensang Sadar-II Assembly constituency, where by-election was held. Asunga Sangtum of Congress is pitted against CM Chang of the ruling Nagaland Peoples Front (NPF) in a straight fight though there is a candidate from Trinamool Congress Rilanthung Odyeo also in the fray.
About 70 to 75 per cent of 9.02 lakh voters today cast votes in the first phase Lok Sabha polls marred by kidnapping of two presiding officers, clashes between supporters of candidates and snatching of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in Outer Manipur constituency. Election office sources said two presiding officers posted at polling stations--Koide (A) and Koide (B) — under Tadubi police station in Senapati district were kidnapped by armed militants.
Voting was stopped at a polling station at Tamenglong district headquarters following quarrel between a presiding officer and election agents of the candidates at around 9 am.
Sources said suspected Naga militants snatched four EVMs from Phuba polling station under Mao police station in Senapati district, nine EVMs from Tengnoupal polling station in Chandel district while one EVM machine was destroyed following quarrel between supporters of BJP candidate Loli Adanee and People’s Democratic Alliance nominee Mani Cheranamei at Karong Junior High School at Kathikhong in Senapati district.
