Tasa’s chances bright in Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency

JORHAT, April 16: Election campaign has picking up speed in Jorhat LS Constituency where a triangular contest among Bijoy Krishna Handique of Congress, Drupad Borgohain of Communist Party of India (CPI) and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected. Along with others, the three parties are pursuing their election campaigns and trying to woo voters by showing their calculations so far to predict victory of their own candidates.

According to the political analysts, the data based on general election 2009 shows that BJP candidate Kamakhya Prasad Tasa is on the top in the fray. In the last election, Congress got 2,23,624, BJP 1,49,820 and CPI 1,72,332 and Congress candidate Bijoy Krishna Handique won the LS seat by 51,295 votes. Political analysts say that in the last polls, the Congress candidate registered the victory only due to the vote division and in the forthcoming polls, no vote division would take place attributing to the seat sharing arrangements.

Apart from it, the previous data shows that in this constituency, there are 3 lakhs of tea tribes voters from which the lions share was won by the Congress which helped Handique win the polls last time, but this time, according to poll analysts, the Congress candidate will not be able to repeat it, BJP candidate Tasa is a tea community leader and he has a strong hold over the community. Moreover the All Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Associa-tion’s decision to help Tasa can be considered as a threat to the Congress candidate. Congress candidate Handique has some probability to win the seat since the Congress have been representing seven Assembly segments in the Lok Sabha Constituency.

On the other hand, senior CPI leader and Nazira LAC legislator Drupad Borgohain is also in the fray. Though the CPI base it not strong in the constituency, yet he has the popularity among the voters as a man of good personality and successful Rajya Sabha member. No one can underestimate his popularity and his probability of winning the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. THE SENTINEL
